Dead men tell no tales...

For more than 200 years, the Treasure Pit on Oak Isle has baffled treasure hunters, engineers, and the common man alike. When Samantha Greene arrives, she finds her estranged father has spent years funneling energy and finances into the endeavor, finding nothing.

When an accidental death occurs in the pit, fulfilling the prophecy that seven lives must end before the treasure can be found, the search kicks into high gear, with more than one party vying for the secrets that lie below. Finding herself the closest to the treasure anyone has ever been, Samantha throws herself into the work, landing among the coveted prize. Just as she's about to discover what's truly hidden beneath the island, the pit begins to flood with ocean water, sweeping her away despite her attempts to swim to the surface.

Upon awaking, Samantha discovers that, not only did she not drown, but the year is 1695—one hundred years before the Treasure Pit was even discovered. Carried off by the pirate Tristan O'Rourke, a rouge Irishman with more than his share of secrets, she soon finds that there is much more than she realized in play. Will she discover the secrets of Oak Isle, or will an unexpected love keep her from finding out the truth? Will she ever make it back to her own time? Perhaps the real question is this; will she want to?

Swept Away A Time Travel Romance The Swept Away Saga Book 1 edition by Kamery Solomon Romance eBooks

When I saw the description indicating that this book was described as a cross between Pirates of the Caribbean and Outlander, I was in! And what a fun ride it was!

The story opens in modern times with Samantha on her way to meet her estranged treasure hunter father after her mom’s death. Although she doesn’t quite believe in his work, she finds herself getting caught up in the excitement and eventually joining the hunt too. When a rival treasure seeker pulls out all the stops to try to take over the Pit and succeeds, Sam makes one last ditch effort to find something real before being kicked off the site. And oh boy does she get more than she bargains for!

After nearly drowning, she awakens on the beach of Oak Isle surrounded by men in period costume and a replica pirate ship anchored in the cove. Distressed, she quickly realizes those are no costumes and the ship is all too real but she has no idea how or why she is waking up in 1695 instead of 2015. Her only savior is the ship’s 2nd in command Tristan O’Rourke but there is only so much be can do to protect her from the mean drunk of a captain. Tristan offers her his own cabin while she is onboard, finding her clothes and food, and generally acting as her protector. The more they talk, the more he realizes there is something different about her and she starts to realize he is no ordinary pirate. When the time comes to part ways, Tristan tries to send her to the safety of a relative’s home but Sam has other ideas. Granted even she acknowledges it is one of the worst ideas she has had, but she tries to sneak onto and hide on a merchant ship bound for America. A priest sees her and takes her onboard with him, and she finds a friend in Father Torres who helps her hide her identity.

Of course Tristan pops back into her life and she finds herself once again back aboard his ship but disguised as a boy this time. She begins to learn Tristan’s secrets and she shares some of hers with him as they both try and fail to fight the attraction between them. But the question remains: how does she get back to 2015, and more importantly, does she want to?

There are colorful scenes throughout this story with sea battles, interesting ports, shipboard gossip and personality clashes. Along the way Sam and Tristan find themselves in each other with a heartfelt connection that leaps off the page. Danger is never far away between threats to Sam’s wellbeing in the forms of the captain and ship to ship battles and to Tristan’s mission in the form of a disgruntled crew member. Although this is a standalone read, there is easily more story waiting to be told based on the way Swept Away ends and I an hoping that story finds its way to us soon! If you love a good adventure with a great love story, grab yourself a copy of this book today.

Swept Away A Time Travel Romance The Swept Away Saga Book 1 edition by Kamery Solomon Romance eBooks Reviews

Marvelous, wonderful, awe-inspiring; these are just a few words to describe just a fraction of the awesomeness that is this book. Kamery Solomon has out done herself; this is her best book so far.
In this book, Samantha goes to visit her father to fulfill a wish by her late mother. Her father is a declared treasure hunter that is spending his life and money on this one endeavor that has yet to produce any treasure. As Sam stays with her father to try to have a relationship, she learns more and more about her father and his mission at the treasure pit on Oak Isle. It becomes addicting to her to help her father and to find what is at the bottom of the pit. But something spectacular happens and Sam finds herself out of her element and without a clue on what to do. This is the time that she meets Tristan O’Rourke. Mr. Tristan “Swoonworthy-sexy-want-to-have-all-to-yourself-and-never-give-up” O’Rourke.
This book is beautifully written. You will get pulled into this book and not want to stop. Even when the book is over you will want more. This story does not end in a cliffhanger but you will still wish there were more chapters to read. The characters are well developed, and the plot has the perfect amount of twists and turns that you will fall in love (with the story and with Tristan). I would highly recommend this book to every and anyone.
I enjoyed this book. I really did. Kamery Solomon is a skilled writer from what I saw here, and she did a nice job making a fun little read about a familiar legend.

The story follows Samantha Greene as she visits her absentee father, a man who gave everything to finding out the secret of the Oak Island money pit. When Sam finally reaches the vault, she is swept away into another time period where she is immediately picked up by pirates. Tristan O'Rourke leads a double life as quartermaster for the Adeline and a Knight Templar. He tries to protect Sam, and... well, it IS a romance. ;-)

What I liked I am smitten with the Oak Island Mystery (okay ANY mystery) and the Templars and pirates, you name it. So reading a fun little romance about all 3 is a treat. So long as I reminded myself constantly to just 'go with it' and suspended disbelief, I could enjoy this story. And I did. Generally, Sam was not an annoying lead female character and Tristan has his sexy swashbuckler moments for sure. Their love felt a tad forced, but I'm used to that in the romance genre. So if you can keep your inner critic on a tight leash, you can easily enjoy this tale, I think.

My issues with the book I won't be reading the rest of the series, because... a) I'm still not 100% sure WHEN she travels back to. At 1st, it was the 17th century Sam went back to. Later, I saw 15th century. A few other times events implied a different time period than those saying things like, "In two hundred years..." Then "three hundred years from now..." In general I think she meant the late 17th C, but, as a lover of history, this vascillation drove me batty because I could never definitively peg when she was supposed to be.

Also, the huge jump in time on the ship... 3 months to port in Europe. Okay. Then on the way back, a few months might go by, though its written more like weeks. Then she's back to thr Adeline. Then suddenly, its been a year? Huh? Wait, when...? Perhaps time tags at chapter breaks would have helped this. A simple 'Three Months Later..." would have smoothed these continuity head-scratchers considerably.

B) Anachronisms were everywhere. Often with dialogue, which any historic fiction author must be cognizant of. Solomon slipped - a lot. Tristan understood every modern cliché Sam said without question. Then, the pirates say things like, "The ships is 2 miles out." Even today, "miles" (except "nautical miles" maybe) is not the term used. Which leads me to

C) RESEARCH. Research research and then when you think you know, just research a little more to be certain. Especially in any historical context like a time-travel tale like this. Mostly it was in the dialogue, as Solomon smoothed over descriptive scenes nicely, softening her lens so the scene could feasibly take place in most eras. Solomon clearly researched, but most definitely not exhaustively. Any comparisons with Outlander are destroyed by this single fact - where Diane Galbadon knew her time period and setting like she'd travelled to it herself, Solomon's story noticeably lacked those fine details that make a story immersive and distinct, especially in that dialogue. And why is Tristan the only person with even an inkling of an accent and colloquialism?

Finally, and this one peeved me something fierce - if you saw it one TV, fine, but make it your own. Change it up, so it isn't rote. Or feeling a bit copy-cattish. Examples The first chapters (which were indeed slow as molasses, as other reviewers noted), are so close to the TV reality series about Oak Isle it almost made me close the book for good. Television is NOT the appropriate medium for researching a novel. I never saw Black Sails, but I've a sneaking suspicion Solomon may have. I'm thinking she was familiar with Outlander and Pirates of the Caribbean. There were so many moments, themes, and plot-points from film media it really stole from the book's credibility. Which was such a shame.

I haven't read anything else from Kamery Solomon, so maybe this was just a fluke, but I believe she has what it takes to be a really good author. She just needs to immerse herself in good nonfiction research until she knows her subject well beyond their Wiki descriptions, if she's going to delve into historical fiction. She didn't go anywhere near deep enough to do her story justice.

Even still, I really did enjoy it, but as I said, I love the mysteries of history.
